Standing seam roofing is a type of metal roofing in which metal roof panels or sheets are positioned vertically along the length of the roof. The seams of these panels are interlocked with each other using clips, and this system is also known as a double-lock system. In standing seam roofing, a concealed clip assembly is roll-formed or crimped into the panel seam without any drilling into the sheet. These clips serve two important functions: they secure the panels to the structural system, reducing the need for additional structural fasteners, and they allow the roof to expand and contract in response to changes in external temperature.

Mechanically seamed panels are roll-formed with specific edges that align with each other. Once the two panels are engaged, a hand or mechanical seamer bends the edges and locks them together. These types of sheets are widely used in airports, commercial buildings, and offices to ensure longevity. Currently, industries have also started using them despite their higher initial cost compared to normal sheets, as the long-term maintenance cost of conventional sheets is higher, and the value of the products stored inside these structures often justifies the one-time investment in standing seam sheets.

Non-Structural Standing Seam Panels.

A non-structural standing seam roofing system consists of two main components: a flat metal panel and a raised seam (or batten) that locks over the panel edges. The seam securely snaps into place over concealed clips, hiding the fasteners and creating a clean, modern appearance while protecting the roof from water infiltration.

Unlike structural standing seam systems, non-structural panels require continuous support from a solid roof deck, such as plywood or metal decking. They cannot be installed as a standalone roofing system over open framing. These panels are also available in tapered and curved profiles, making them an excellent choice for projects with unique architectural designs or curved rooflines.

Continuous Seam Positive Locking:

A continuous standing seam metal roof features panels with built-in interlocking seams. Each panel securely locks into the previous one and is held in place with concealed clips, eliminating the need for separate seam caps. The panels are attached using either fixed or sliding clips. Sliding clips allow the metal to expand and contract with changing temperatures, helping prevent stress or damage over time.
